Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older and certain younger people with disabilities or specific conditions. Established in 1965, Medicare has significantly improved access to healthcare for older Americans, reducing financial barriers to essential medical services. The program is divided into several parts: Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services; Part B includes outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and medical equipment; Part C, known as Medicare Advantage, offers an alternative through private insurers that often bundle Parts A and B with additional benefits like dental and vision; and Part D provides prescription drug coverage. These components collectively help older adults manage healthcare costs.

While Medicare does not cover assisted living, it will cover certain costs for people with dementia, including hospital care, cognitive assessments, home health care, hospice care, medications (under Part D), and skilled nursing home care. McHARRIE LIFE SENIOR COMMUNITY offers independent retirement living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing care, and short-term rehabilitation.
